Hitches
Cow Hitch
Lark's head, girth hitch
DIFFICULTY ●○○○○
Fold the rope into a bight, pass it around or through the object, and feed the ends through the bight. Two half hitches facing opposite ways, tied in one motion.
See it tied step-by-step ↗Why it earns its place
Instant, symmetrical, and works with slings and webbing as well as rope — climbers know it as the girth hitch. The knot on every luggage tag you've ever owned.
Where it fails
Weaker and less secure than a clove hitch under uneven load, and girth-hitching slings sharply reduces their strength. Fine for light duty; think twice beyond that.
