Loops

Slip Knot

DIFFICULTY ○○○○

The instant adjustable loop: an overhand knot tied around its own standing part with a bight, so one pull on the end collapses the whole thing.

Why it earns its place

Tied and untied in a second, and the loop slides to fit whatever it's around. The starting point for crochet, balloon ties, and countless temporary jobs.

Where it fails

It's a temporary knot by design — never use it where accidental release would matter. People also confuse it with the noose-style running knots; a slip knot collapses when you pull the tail.
