Thief Knot

DIFFICULTY ○○○○

Identical to a square knot except the working ends exit on opposite corners instead of the same side. Sailors' lore says sea chests were tied with it to catch snooping shipmates.

Why it earns its place

A knot tied not to hold but to tell: a thief re-tying the chest would instinctively tie a proper square knot, and the owner would know. Also sharpens your eye for knot inspection.

Where it fails

Even less secure than the square knot it impersonates — this is a story and a training aid, never a working knot.
