Loops

Englishman's Loop

Fisherman's loop
DIFFICULTY ●●○○○

Two overhand knots — one tied around the standing part, one in it — slid together to jam into a fixed loop. The fisherman's knot rearranged into loop form.

Why it earns its place

Simple to remember if you know the fisherman's knot, and very secure in thin cord and line where fancier loops are fiddly to form.

Where it fails

Like its bend-form parent, it jams for keeps after loading. In rope you will want back, the bowline or figure eight loop serve better.
