The standard knot for joining two ropes — including ropes of different thickness. The thicker rope forms a bight, the thinner rope locks through and around it.

Joins mismatched ropes when almost nothing else will, ties in seconds, and unties easily. Structurally it's a bowline's twin, which makes it easy to remember.
Where it fails
Both tails must exit on the same side or you've tied the weaker 'left-handed' version. It can also work loose when slack — double it for slick or very unequal ropes.
